Ouch

I knew better.  But i did it anyway…  Completely unprepared, i managed to stumble my way across 3.1 miles of pavement.  Just last October, i managed to do that plus 10 more in the half-marathon.  C’mon.  Shouldn’t be so hard….

It was a beautiful day, warmish weather, and i finished without humiliation.  No land speed records were broken, but neither were any body parts broken*, so it was a success…

Rather than beat myself up about my lousy condition, i am considering it the start of my training season.  Planning to get the bike out, and get my ass moving as the weather improves.  Running brings me no joy, but i’m committed to losing another 20 lbs before i head to Spain in late June… 3 lbs down, 17 lbs to go.  This pavement pounding thing is the most efficient way to do it.  So i shall run…

On the bright side, when doing these “fun run” events, there’s always a swag bag that you get on race day.  For a mere $15, i got to pound myself silly and picked up some consolation prizes!  The swag for today was lovely – although a big ass bar of dark chocolate would have sweetened the deal…

In addition to the event T-shirt, were the standard water bottle, memo pads, pens, refrigerator magnets and the like.  But my favorite bit of “Colon Bling” was the roll of toilet paper, with the “Wipe Out Colon Cancer” banner wrapped around it…

Almost worth the pain.  Almost…

_______

* mine or those of innocent bystanders…

Run, colon, run!

I have become a slug-sicle.  Seeing brain-damaged dedicated runners out in freezing rain, snow, fog and ice was initially inspirational.  It became annoying.

Until i got on the scale this morning {music of doom here}

There were signs that i had done a bit of backsliding.  In the shower last week i felt something on the back of my thigh.  It was my ass….

Time to pound some pavement.

As of this week, i am signed up for a 5k run to benefit colorectal cancer research.  I’m not sure what the offical name is, but it shall henceforth be called the Colon Run.  I started re-training yesterday – indoors, but it’s a start.

The event is scheduled for 29 March, giving me sufficient time to avoid public humiliation injury.  After just two nights of light cardio, i find myself looking forward to the first ice-free saturday morning… it’s been a long, cold, lonely winter.  i need fresh air… and i need to get my rear in gear.

Three Mile Run: A Post-Mortem

First attempt to run in the new year.  Ok.  First attempt to run since mid-November.

<putting on running shoes, sport watch…> Don’t wanna.  Don’t wanna….

<walking down driveway> Shit.  I really don’t want to do this, but it’s 40 degrees out.  Won’t get much nicer this time of year…

<sees single neighbor drive by> No turning back now.  He’s seen me.  Can’t pretend to be getting the newspaper.

<thud> fuck <thud> shit <thud> what <thud> was <thud> i <thud> thinking? <thud>

<thuds along in mental silence briefly>

<thud> how can it take so long to gain endurance, yet only a couple months to lose it all?  yeah.  ok.  a couple months is a long time….

<thud> wonder if there’s any way inhabitants of The Park will find the blog.  they’d be pretty upset.  hey, it would be drama, though.  i don’t really want to cause them pain…

<thud> speaking of pain, SHIT!  this hurts… i need to get back with the koach.  she beat my ass into shape…

<thud> <thud> <thud>  hmmm… wonder if she owns any leather?  she’d be kinda hot…

<thuds along for several minutes> snow’s all melted.  all the snow has turned to water.  christmas days have come and gone.  i really need to see John Prine before he dies…

<thud> speaking of dying…. DAMN! the achilles tendon again?

<thuds along for several more minutes, mind wandering aimlessly through the week ahead and the piles of mindless goo awaiting her on the desk tomorrow morning>

<thud> <thud> <thud> well… home already?  slower than shit, but i did it.  it wasn’t horrible.  ok.  it hurt like a mother.  speaking of which… need to call momma down in The Park today…
