Settling in…

It’s strange, but good.  After twenty years in a comfortable family home, i’m starting fresh.  Some observations on differences and adjustments…

– My dog can shit four times a day.  When i just put him out back in the fenced in yard at the old homestead, i didn’t stand there watching him do a poo.  Until i started walking him three or four times a day, i had no idea what a complete shitting machine he is…

– The bathroom just isn’t right.  No shelves for all that “girl shrapnel” (make up, potions, lotions and gooey things).  Putting it in drawers isn’t the same.  Made a run today for some small shelves/baskets to help organize it.  Won’t be truly settled until i can put on my make up in a pre-caffeinated haze in the morning…

– My dog likes going for walks.  The first few times, Mr. Pickles was timid, nose down, and skittish.  After a few days?  Head up, tail up and a jaunty sproing to his step.  Sniffing here, peeing there, he’s having a great time when we go out.  Probably clocking in a mile or so every day, i look forward to the morning and evening walks as well.

– Speaking of evening walks… it is a bit difficult to find and bag dog poo while holding a flashlight – and a hyperactive dog.  i need one more hand.  Perhaps one of my camping headlamps?  Need to come up with something before winter sets in and it’s dark after work…

– Quiet.  i mean reallyquiet.  No street noise, generators, lawnmowers… or voices.  Just frogs, crickets, cicadas.  The Stepford Neighbors don’t seem to go out much after dusk…

–  i don’t miss the old house.  At first i had moments of squishy, nostalgic glurge… “my babies grew up there…” and “we had so much fun there…”.  After spending the better part of the past two weekends repairing odds and ends there?  Screw it.  i’m sick of replacing screens, washing windows, replacing outlet covers and mucking around in the old place.  ARRRRRGH!  i need it rented, and i want it behind me!

– i still have way too much shit.  Today, i took three more bags of clothing and shoes to Goodwill.  More to go.  i’m still in a “pare down” mindset… and i feels good.  But so much more to pitch.  Overwhelming…

– Empty… The Girl is settling into her new gig in Beirut.  The Boy is in an apartment on the main campus of his university (rather than living in a small apartment in a cornhole town attending a satellite campus).  Classes start in about a week.  He’ll have plenty of distractions, not to mention, his own washer/dryer.  i don’t expect to see much of either of them this year… as it should be…

– In six weeks:  i leave for a two week trip to South America.  Holy Crap.  i’ve got a lot to do between now and then… unpacking?  Still at the top of the list…

  1. Wow – that’s all so cool! I love fresh starts!

Soon, someone will be moving out of my house and I will have it all to myself. It will seem brand new.

    South America?! How amazing! Pictures!

  2. Re: dog shit. What are you feeding Mr. Pickles? If you haven’t gone down the road of quality dog food, then you might consider it. There are good dog foods and there are bad dog foods. The bad dog foods (i.e. anything from Wal-Mart) are full of filler and contribute to larger and more frequent piles of crap. Get a really good dog food, with no filler, and you may see a nice decrease in the amount of lumpy’s you have to pick up.

PS: The camping headlight is an excellent idea. Those things rock!

Glad you’re getting settled in. The “quiet” part sounds very nice.

  3. I second Rob, buy quality dog food. Friday only goes out about twice a day. I tried the grocery store stuff, but we had problems with it. Anyway, Cockers have skin problems, so I shouldn’t have even tried the grocery store stuff. When she was eating it, she also went back to piddling all over the place. Back to her usual food, and the piddling stopped. But then again, you may like the walking.
I got to where I could walk all the way around the block when Epona was down, a major triumph. But how much energy I expend doing that comes out of what I have for the entire day. So I’m trying to walk her once a day, and the other time we do our business on one of our rides.

And Alex, because if everybody leaves them in the dark, soon they are knee deep.

  4. heartbreaktown – wow! big changes for you, too! good luck – and tackling it from a “MY PLACE!” point of view is exciting! you can make it yours, and paint it any color you want!

annie – so. much. more. to. do. seems endless…. more bags ready to go today…

rob – this IS with the ‘good’ stuff. Iams is supposed to do the “high density doo”. Granted, there isn’t much when he drops ’em. And he can hold it for over 12 hours when he has to… i think – like every male i know – the dog just likes to make poo. A canine defecation artist… if i could find my camping gear, i’d be all set with the headlamp! by the end of the week, i hope…

unbearable banishment – the trip was scheduled, bought and paid for months before i decided to move. and the way i travel? the disruption will only be about a week before (shutting down mail, paying bills, stopping the paper, etc) and the two weeks i’m gone. oh, and work… but who cares about that? Mr. P will likely go stay with my niece and her husband down in The Park. They love him, have lots of other critters, and have a fenced yard. i use pet sitters twice a day for shorter trips – and he does fine with that. for 2 weeks? that’s too long to leave him alone…

alex – First off, the condo association levies a fine for unretrieved turds. and Mr. P leaves a “signature”, so i couldn’t deny they are his… not only is he bigger than the collection of “li’l yappies” common here, but he’s a “walker”, so his turds are left in a perfect counter-clockwise spiral. if there were any forensic detectives out there, they’d nail us in a heartbeat…

silverstar – the walking is sort of relaxing, and it’s exercise for us both, so it’s not bad. at least until the snow and cold sets in! that should be interesting! and yeah – i wouldn’t want to step in someone else’s dog poo, so i’m getting used to the ‘warm bag of poo’ that accompanies me on the walks…

DP – i’m sure it will be appreciated. right before they start throwing bricks at your box head…

  5. (not a surprise) but I also need my girl schrapnel out and in pre-awake reaching distance. Drawers are no good. And tell the girl to watch out for those Lebanese men….wicked!

  6. Bb – or a cork. He’s a machine. has even made TWO on the same outing…

dolce – she navigated the Morrocan Male waters, so she’s ready for the Lebanese men… i think…

Alex – out in the “bush”? not an issue… and “dog biccies” is my new favorite phrase! going to work that into a conversation at work today if at all possible!

tNb – Suspect you’ll get there one of these days! Will need water cooling for your passport!

  7. Hey girl. I’ve been espousing the fucking benefits of walking your damn dog for years! (well–2) and you only do it when you gots to. I see. What-ev.

Seriously, though–the walking is great. I didn’t like it in the winter, but you’re not a cold pussy like I am. So I think you’ll grow to dig it.
