Travel Prep – Geek-style

Although i have no idea what is “normal”, i know it’s not me when it comes to travel prep. i leave for Spain in less than 48 hours. Up until yesterday, i hadn’t given any thought to clothing for the trip. Thanks to azahar and nursemyra (and nog‘s computer), i’m now aware that southern Spain is hot.

Somehow i probably should have known this…

But, i was too busy with my really important travel preparations! i bought a new travel laptop!  Nerd Joy of Joys! It’s an Asus EeePC 900. To quote The Girl when she first saw it “Awww…. it’s cute! It thinks it’s a real PC!”.  Wicked cool stuff – cheap, rugged and extrordinarily functional*.  It’s got a slot for a photo memory card and an embedded 1.3MPixel Webcam**.

Oh, and i needed a new camera – the one i had is an ancient Kodak digital – but it was the first 3.1 MPixel on the market!  Time for an upgrade! Picked up a Canon S5 IS – high quality “point-and-shoot for idiots”.  I’ve had some help figuring out how to use the timer, so this li’l puppy is ready for adventure!

Granted, these purchases are not just for the holiday in Spain, but in preparation for a two-week excursion to South America in October.  i may never get back to the Galapagos, and need good toys.  This trip allows time to practice, and optimize peripherals if needed.

Speaking of peripherals…

Since nursemyra and i are threatening considering a dual “Corset Friday“, and she’s already purchased a lime green corset for this event, naturally, i’ve managed to purchase just the right items to assure maximum color coordination!  Fashion isn’t for sissies, after all…  Festive underthings?  Check.

Oh, and books!  Got about five books so far.  Enough time on planes to read at least three, and figure i can borrow a few from my holiday gal pals!  Twenty bags of Orville Redenbacher’s finest popcorn stand ready to be compacted into baggies, and stashed lovingly into my suitcase as well.

So.  What have i forgotten?  Ummmm.  Clothing?  Yes, clothing for 10 days away from home might be a good thing to pack…  Jeans – which i’ve now been told are too hot to wear in southern Spain in July.  Suppose i could wear the festive undergarments as evening wear, but suspect i’ll need something more.  Shit.  Where exactly does one purchase a “wisp of cotton” that won’t make me look like a cow?

i’ll have to dig something out of The Girl’s closet, excavate beneath the bed or just buy something during my layover in Philadelphia***.  There are more important things to do between now and then!  Like scrounging through electronic surplus stores to find an adapter that will let me hook up my external folding keyboard to the Eee PC!

* Just like me!

** No.  There shall be no “Corset Friday Preparation Video”.  Sorry.

*** Little Known Fact:  Magazines and Travel Pillows can be stuck together with Post-it Notes and fashioned into garments.

  1. You’re NOT making this any easier.

Aaaah. But have fun, Ms Fae. And try not to get arrested.

Are you allowed to smuggle popcorn?

    [mind] —> *boggle*

  2. ctyri – once i get out the door, the fun begins. Odd – this is my first “solo” vacation. Even though i’ll be meeting friends, and even though i travel alone on business frequently, it’s different. Good, but different…

heartbreaktown – an entire week without my work blackberry! withdrawal or sweet escape? looking forward to it!

kyknoord – i learned the same thing. no matter when i start, i never get it right. same is true for work deadlines, unfortunately. i consider the “Procrastination” method a forme of supreme efficiency. Screw quality…

az – not likely to work the adapters out for the keyboard before this trip. been to a multitude of geek-ware stores, ordered some wrong parts online, and will just have to wait til i’m back to sort it out… but the Eeep! (love that) is festive! Less than 1kg (2lbs)…

dolce – sorry. console yourself with your LB Boytoy. repeat as necessary!

  3. Hey, the purpose of the trip is “Festive Frolicking With Chicks”… who needs planning for that! Show up. Have fun. Come home with memories of a lifetime. I’m pretty sure you can handle that. The rest, you’ve seem to cover it all quite well (I envy you experienced travelers for that). Now the focus is to enjoy. Have at it, Daisyfae, and keep us apprised of the festivities.

  4. as an experienced traveller who can last a month overseas with one tiny suitcase (the trick is to colour coordinate and ´roll´everything) i have been caught short this time having brought the wrong adapter to recharge my camera. and as for the fiasco of not having a PIN for my mastercard……

at least there´s always a cold beer available!

  5. Middle Daughter loves the mini-comp. Her bank is giving them free to customers with two automatic bill pays or more per month, so she is scheming. She is a Linux girl though.

Corset Friday a double feature, eh? Lime green? What goes with that?

Have a great time in Spain.

  6. Daisyfae,

2 words–HAVE FUN. Never been to Spain, but my buds who have says it is fun city.

I’ll use the response that a cohort of yours (and mine) made at a going away celebration many moons ago–“no one was arrested, you did not commit any crimes, everyone got home safe–everything is cool…..”

Though I did have some Sharpie body art/messages on me, a little rubbing alcohol got it off–no prob…………

What is up with your undergarments–you are worrying me…….
Make sure you don’t visit the tatooist after a bender……

    I want pictures…….

  7. gnu – i know. it’s getting done with the work schtuff (done – mostly) then getting to an airport. once my butt’s in the seat of a transatlantic plane, i’m good.

nm – i’m a “roller” as well. can generally pack efficiently, once i figure out what to bring. problem this time? i really don’t have much in the way of “Hotter than Hades” clothing. Suppose less is more…

annie – the Asus is a dream geekin’ machine! been surfin’ the geek-message boards, and realized that i have truly achieved uber-dork status with this purchase. my nerd friends hadn’t heard of this thing… and the lime green was a challenge. depending on the shade of “lime green” (neon or non-neon) that nursemyra has, i’m prepared with a couple choices…

squirrelqueen – thanks! i’m a lucky pup to have the flexibility and resources to go… will behave. mostly. perhaps… i’ll have to think about that some more…

cincygrad – i’ve never been to spain, but i kinda like the music. say the ladies are insane there… so i guess that means i’ll fit right in! was i involved in that Sharpie incident? i disavow any knowledge, even if i could remember it… i’m not likely to get tattooed. pierced? maybe…

  8. kono – absolutely on all counts! Three continents, four breastages… doing our part to bring peace, love and understanding to a scary, twisted world. (heh, heh, heh… flashing boobies is FUN!)
